James Tracey



James Tracey was born near Derry, Northern Ireland on 18/08/1876. His father was John Treacy. Throughout the family both spellings of the surname are used. His mother was Mary Kergan. He moved to Scotland and married at the age of 28. He worked in the steelworks around Motherwell. He died on 12/06/1964.



James Tracey and Eliza Woods (Bennett) married on 13/06/1903. They lived first in Craigneuk, Lanarkshire Scotland. Together they had four daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Ellen (Nellie) and Rose Ann. They also had one son, James, who died at birth. They later moved to Glenburn Terrace, Carfin because of Eliza's health.

 

 

Eliza Bennett



Eliza Bennett was born on 26/03/1874. Her father was Moses Bennett, her mother Margaret Hodkinson. They lived in Chorley, Lancashire where she worked in the cotton mills. She married Jacob Woods and had two sons Herbert Woods (born 12/11/1894) and Charles Woods. She was on holiday in Scotland where she met and later married James Tracey when she was aged 31. She died on 22/03/47.

Mary married James McMenemy.
They lived in Paisley.
They had three children James (Jimmy),
Desmond and Mary (May)

Elizabeth Tracey (Lizzie)
born 4 August 1909
died 26 January 1986

Lizzie married Thomas Reilly
They had six children.
They lived in Carfin and
later moved to Newarthill.

Helen Tracey (Nellie)
born 6 November 1912
died 12 February 1998

Nellie married John Hunter Patterson.
They lived first in Alloa, later Girvan.
They had six children
Elizabeth, Rosemary, John,
Joseph, Eleanor and Margaret

Rose Ann Tracey (Rose)
born 4 September 1917
died January 2000


Rose never married.
She lived in Carfin and
later moved to Newarthill

Eliza's Two Sons

Charles Woods lived in Carfin.
He married Catherine Boyle.
They had four daughters and one son.

 

Herbert Woods emigrated to Perth,
Western Australia where he married.
He did not keep in contact with the rest
of the family after his mother died.

Lizzie Woods, Charlie's daughter's wedding to John Gallagher.
The bridesmaids are her sister Phyllis and Jean Boyle.
The little bridesmaid is Rose Collins and her brother Charlie is a page boy.

Elizabeth and Roseann Tracey

James' sisters Lizzie and Rosann
went to teach in Cape Town, South Africa with a Dominican Order.
They were known as Sr Mary Eugene and Sr Mary Bernadette.
They taught at Springfield Convent School.

They are buried together
in the grounds of Springfield Convent.



Roseann came back to Derry for a holiday in the 1970s.
She is pictured here with Rose and Nan and Roly Cunningham
