Western Caribbean
22 January - 2 February 2006

Below are a selection of the photographs taken on our 11 day cruise of the Western Caribbean sailing from New York and calling at Ocho Rios - Jamaica, George Town - Grand Cayman, Roatan - Honduras, Cozumel - Mexico, and Nassau - Bahamas. The cruise was relaxing, the weather perfect and the food and entertainment wonderful.

The weather in New York was unseasonably good
so we were able to have a walk in the park

Relaxing around the ship!

The public beach which we thought was nearby
but actually walked nearly an hour to get to.

Roatan, Honduras

View as we approached Roatan.

This turned out to be the only photograph I took as the island was very poor and I did not feel it appropriate.

Grand Cayman

On Grand Cayman we went to Seven Mile beach and my camera stayed in the case in my bag as I was afraid of getting sand in it.

This was my favourite destination on this cruise

After visiting the ruins we were taken on a walk into the rainforest which is part of the site

At the end of the forest is a specially constructed lake with a limestone base which meant that there was always water available when the site was in use.

A tangling vine which is hugging
and gradually destroying a tree

Our walk came to an end here.
We could just catch site of the lake ahead
but were not prepared to go further
although our guide did offer to continue

Cozumel

We took a trip around the island in a minibus
with some others from the ship

A sight of water and he is off!

The beach on the other side od the island

The biggest feature of the island was the damage done by Hurricane Wilma in October 2006. The three landing piers, at which cruise ships dock, were completely destroyed. Most of the hotels and many private houses were badly damaged. They re-opened to cruise ships after one month and hope to have the hotels repaired and open by March 2006

The damaged happened all over the island

One of the first pictures of the Statue of Liberty
that I managed to take from the ship.
It was possible because we sailed up
the Hudson in daylight this time.
